With an area of just over 40 square miles, San Marino is Europe’s third smallest country, after Vatican City and Monaco. Rising from the republic’s rolling hills, is Mount Titano, where the country’s founder, Saint Marinus, sought refuge in the 3rd Century. Over the centuries, three towers were built to ward off invaders; today these towers watch over a country overflowing with history, culture and beauty. Just beyond the towers lies the republic’s ancient capital, San Marino City. The heart and soul of this city is Liberty Square, home to the Statue of Liberty and the Palazzo Pubblico. Wherever you turn you’ll see tributes to the republic’s founder, no more so than in San Marino Basilica, where the bones of the saint now rest beneath the altar. Like the republic’s founder, many have ...

The Eternal City, where all roads lead. The heart of the former ancient empire is now full with the establishments of the 21st century. The Circus Maximus and the Forum Romanum are only ruins now, but the Colosseum, the Triumphal Arch and Trajan’s Column is still standing, while the Capitolium flourishes in its full beauty. One can see the the baths of Diocletian and Caracalla and can put one’s hand in the Mouth of Truth. The later periods added the Castel Sant’Angelo, the Fontana di Trevi, the Spanish Steps and the bridges crossing the Tiber to the landscape of the city built on seven hills. In the middle of Rome, there is a country protected by the Swiss Guards: Vatican, the centre of the Catholic world. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► http://goo.gl/HYQdhg Join us. Under the Roman Empire, many villas were constructed there, after Agrippina the Elder drained the area and laid out her gardens in the early 1st century AD. In AD 40, her son, Emperor Caligula built in her gardens a circus for charioteers (AD 40) that was later completed by Nero, the Circus Gaii et Neronis, usually called, simply, the Circus of Nero. Even before the arrival of Christianity, it is supposed that this originally uninhabited part of Rome (the ager vaticanus) had long been considered sacred, or at least not available for habitation.[citation needed] A shrine dedicated to the Phrygian goddess Cybele and her consort Attis remained active long after the Constantinian Basilica of St. Peter was built nearby. The particularly low quality of Vatican water, even after the reclamation of the area, was commented on by the poet Martial (40 – between 102 and 104 AD). Tacitus wrote, that in AD 69, the Year of the Four Emperors, when the northern army that brought Vitellius to power arrived in Rome, "a large proportion camped in the unhealthy districts of the Vatican, which resulted in many deaths among the common soldiery; and the Tiber being close by, the inability of the Gauls and Germans to bear the heat and the consequent greed with which they drank from the stream weakened their bodies, which were already an easy prey to disease". Learn about all there is to see in Vatican City in this travel video. Vatican City is actually its own city-state within Rome and one of the top reasons to visit Rome. The heart of the Roman Catholic Church is packed with religious and artistic treasures. In the Vatican Palace, you’ll find the Vatican Museums where you can see the acclaimed Picture Gallery which contains paintings by illustrious artists like da Vinci, Bellini, and Caravaggio. The Raphael Rooms are also not to be missed. This is a suite of rooms decorated with frescoes painted by Raphael. The work in these rooms is considered among his best. But the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel are considered the best in the world -- the ceiling of frescoes by Michelangelo are widely considered to be the greatest pieces of art created in the Renaissance. Vatican City is also home to a wealth of beautiful architecture. St Peter’s Basilica is known as the largest church in the world, as well as one of the most beautiful. Designed by some of the best artistic minds of the late Renaissance, it lives up to its reputation as one of the Roman Catholic Church’s most reverent and divine sites. Like the republic’s founder, many have sought refuge on this mountain, including the Italian revolutionary hero, Garibaldi. Today, San Marino is a welcoming escape for lovers of art and history, and a tax-free haven for shoppers. The true stars of San Marino are its towers. Dating back to the 11th century, Guaita Tower, is the oldest and the largest fortress of the three. Follow the scenic pathway to the highest point of Mount Titano to the battlements of Cesta Tower, while on the farthest peak rises Montale. What this country lacks in size, it more than makes up for with that rarest of qualities, serenity. After all, its official name is, The Most Serene Republic of San Marino. https://www.expedia.com/San-Marino.d6054756.Destination-Travel-Guides -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Expedia Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/expedia Instagram: http://instagram.com/expedia Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/Expedia/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+Expedia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on our travel blog, Viewfinder: http://viewfinder.expedia.com/
